Ash pulled her BMW into the empty space beside Sam’s car.

As she turned off the engine, Sam turned to face her. “Ash, this has been one of the best days I’ve had in a really long time. Thank you.”

Ash smiled. “You’re welcome. And me too.”

Sam shook her head. “I can’t believe you showed me something entirely new about the place I’ve lived all of my life. You don’t even know how much time I’ve spent right around here and never went down that street. I can’t wait to show the tree to Jake.” Sam laughed. “He’s going to lose his mind.”

Ash looked down for a moment, feeling suddenly unsure. She wanted to see Sam again, to feel this way again as soon as possible, but she didn’t know how Sam felt. She felt really vulnerable about putting herself out there. She wasn’t sure if it was just because of their past, but she realized that everything about this situation felt different. That scared her, but she also knew that the times she had felt this kind of fear before—whether it was softball, traveling, or moving to a new place—those risks ended up being her biggest joys.

The difference was that all of those risks had been her choice. This time, it was up to Sam.

She took a deep breath, looking at Sam, trying hard not to look as terrified as she felt. “So, do you think you’d like to do this again sometime?”

Sam’s face relaxed. She took Ash’s hand and squeezed it gently as she smiled at her. “I would love to.”

Ash’s face lit up. There was something comforting about Sam. Ash wasn’t sure if it was because she was a mom, but Sam seemed to be able to see Ash’s vulnerability and calm her without even trying.

Sam still held Ash’s hand. Ash didn’t want the date to end, but she knew Sam needed to go soon.

Almost on cue, Sam’s phone rang, seeming unusually loud in the quiet car.

“Sorry,” Sam said with a frown, grabbing it from her back pocket. “Hello?”

Ash could make out a woman’s voice on the other end.

“Oh good. Okay, do you want me to help you cook the fish?”

There was a pause before a flurry of words. Sam rolled her eyes and shook her head.

“Okay, then. I’ll head on over. Thanks, Mom.”

Sam looked at Ash with a half frown. “I’m sorry. I’ve gotta go. My mom’s cooking the fish Jake and my dad caught.” She laughed. “She won’t admit she thinks I’m a bad cook. She tried to reject my help by blaming it on the small size of the fish Jake caught.”

Ash laughed. “She’s just trying to protect your feelings.”

“I suppose.” Sam turned serious. “I’ll see you soon?”

Ash nodded as Sam leaned over and kissed her gently. Sam looked a little sad when she pulled away.

“Bye, Ash.”
