Ash pulled her BMW into the empty space beside Samâs car.
As she turned off the engine, Sam turned to face her. âAsh, this has been one of the best days Iâve had in a really long time. Thank you.â
Ash smiled. âYouâre welcome. And me too.â
Sam shook her head. âI canât believe you showed me something entirely new about the place Iâve lived all of my life. You donât even know how much time Iâve spent right around here and never went down that street. I canât wait to show the tree to Jake.â Sam laughed. âHeâs going to lose his mind.â
Ash looked down for a moment, feeling suddenly unsure. She wanted to see Sam again, to feel this way again as soon as possible, but she didnât know how Sam felt. She felt really vulnerable about putting herself out there. She wasnât sure if it was just because of their past, but she realized that everything about this situation felt different. That scared her, but she also knew that the times she had felt this kind of fear beforeâwhether it was softball, traveling, or moving to a new placeâthose risks ended up being her biggest joys.
The difference was that all of those risks had been her choice. This time, it was up to Sam.
She took a deep breath, looking at Sam, trying hard not to look as terrified as she felt. âSo, do you think youâd like to do this again sometime?â
Samâs face relaxed. She took Ashâs hand and squeezed it gently as she smiled at her. âI would love to.â
Ashâs face lit up. There was something comforting about Sam. Ash wasnât sure if it was because she was a mom, but Sam seemed to be able to see Ashâs vulnerability and calm her without even trying.
Sam still held Ashâs hand. Ash didnât want the date to end, but she knew Sam needed to go soon.
Almost on cue, Samâs phone rang, seeming unusually loud in the quiet car.
âSorry,â Sam said with a frown, grabbing it from her back pocket. âHello?â
Ash could make out a womanâs voice on the other end.
âOh good. Okay, do you want me to help you cook the fish?â
There was a pause before a flurry of words. Sam rolled her eyes and shook her head.
âOkay, then. Iâll head on over. Thanks, Mom.â
Sam looked at Ash with a half frown. âIâm sorry. Iâve gotta go. My momâs cooking the fish Jake and my dad caught.â She laughed. âShe wonât admit she thinks Iâm a bad cook. She tried to reject my help by blaming it on the small size of the fish Jake caught.â
Ash laughed. âSheâs just trying to protect your feelings.â
âI suppose.â Sam turned serious. âIâll see you soon?â
Ash nodded as Sam leaned over and kissed her gently. Sam looked a little sad when she pulled away.
âBye, Ash.â
